Decision Support SystemThe CLINICIP decision support system is based on standard manual blood glucose measurements taken either with a blood gas analyser or a handheld certified glucose meter. The measured glucose concentration is entered into the touch screen user interface of the CLINICIP system, which is attached to the patient as an infusion system. The intelligent integrated algorithm calculates the required insulin dose taking into consideration actual rates of enteral and parenteral nutrition together with the glucose concentration. The next sampling interval, typically ranging between 30 minutes and 4 hours, is suggested to the health care professional via countdown timer and acoustic alarm. The benefitsThe CLINICIP decision support system has been successfully tested in a nurse-operated clinical trial: • Reproducible results in different ICUs • Effective with more than 50% of glucose levels within a tight glycaemic target range • Minimum workload for health care professionals with average sampling intervals of 2.5 to 3 hours even in severely ill patients • No intuitive decision by the health care professionals required for tight glycaemic control • Easy implementation after only one hour introduction • Safe glycaemic control with 1 hypoglycaemic event in 434 ICU days (i.e. 0.002 events per 24 hours). The system is in the product development phase, Market release can be expected in due course after the end of the CLINICIP project
