Clinical ImplementationSpecial focus in the CLINICIP project was placed on developing and testing all components, subsystems and the overall system in close cooperation between scientists and clinicians. Clinical research activities were carried out throughout the project to develop a clinical concept for the implementation of a tight glycaemic control system, to support the development of a clinically acceptable user interface, and to perform single-centre and multicentre clinical trials for testing the newly developed sensor systems and body interface technologies as well as the computer algorithm in the clinical setting. The clinical tests of the CLINICIP decision support system were based on an iterative circle of algorithm improvement (see Figure). The algorithm was implemented on a laptop PC and iteratively tested and enhanced in clinical studies. The findings and expertise from these tests were used to integrate the algorithm into the infusion system so as to establish reliable and effective communication between the individual pump systems. The results were also channelled into the design of the touch screen user interface, which was developed in close cooperation with doctors and nurses.
